Issues of Brain Drain and Gain

Hi dear reader, it is imperative at this point to have an in depth analysis of the rate of drain and gain in the national grid of knowledge, intellectuals, genius and scenius. Here, I want to bring to the fore, rate of brain drain as it supersedes that of gain. The discourse of the above national topic tends to expose what and what encourage brain drain. Likewise the article will also delineate those factors that encourage brain gain.
Hence below is the enlistment of some of this points which encourage and discourage brain drain in the national equation;
• Absolute Zero Employment: This is a situation whereby there is lack of employment. As well most jobs are kept for high echelon in our society and to who knows who. Some jobs openings are no more based on merit academically or on the job experience. At the end of the day, this forces genius to go in search of greener pastures in foreign lands.
• Lack of Power: Here, when a nation cannot provide its inhabitants with consistent and uninterrupted power supply that nation encourages brain drain and economic drain as well. This is exemplified in Nigeria where her businessmen are moving over Ghana for efficient and effective return on investment. Most economic versus business activities rely on power for its day to day operations.
• Inavailability of Financial Incentives: What I mean here is that it is the duty of both governments and its financial institutions to offer manufacturers, distributors etc loans and other financial support available. When there is a lack in such areas that brings about drain in the national knowledge base.
On the other hand, the only and essential commodity that brings about a brain gain is this; numerous other factors do exist.
• Investment Opportunity and Security: It is of paramount importance for the need of security in a state to protect both employers and investors from danger. In the same vein, investment opportunity is the only safe landing avenue to attract both local and foreign investors to thrive in a nation. This last two point go hand-in-hand and as well complement each other. It is because the inavailability of one can usher in the reduction or lack of the other. What is your own view to the game of brain drain and gain? Your answer can be found in your state national statistics.

The Power of Nudity and Fashion in Women

Let me start by defining nudity as it is expressed in the Merriam Webster Dictionary as being devoid of a natural or conventional covering especially not covered by clothing. The act of going nude is born out of fashion. At this point I would like to bring to the fore certain shifts from fashion to nudism. The reader before this generation entered both the jet and information age, women have been seen with so creatively sown clothing of all types.
Some of which are so interesting and appealing to behold; on the other hand acceptable. It is a truism to state without equivocation that it is crave for fashion that led women to dress and appear nude. Nudism which is practiced by the female folk all over the world existed through the evolution of fashion. It is against this backdrop that intellectuals captured it as the practice of going nude especially in sexually mixed groups. The so called evolutionary trend in fashion industry now led to go almost naked is something to be contended with.
Today, it has become a norm and socially accepted to dress anyway you like. It has been adopted without asking what the implications are. What are the effects to the society? The focus of this write-up revolves around the above questions and how to go about resolving this societal madness. Our women new fashion glamour is only intended for distraction to the opposite sex. In the days past women concentrate on whatever she lays her hand on. But today on seeing rudely dressed lady, her focus shifts to thinking on how to be the one wearing such bombshell called mini-skirt, body hug, tight jeans etc.
Consequently, this has brought in its wake girl-child rape, extensive spread of the almighty virus termed Human Immune Virus (HIV). Our society witnesses high rate of armed robbery, get rich quick syndrome, ritual killings to mention but a few. It is not only the issue of economic down-turn that makes the masses to suffer but on the contrary we have refused to put our priority right. The builders of our homes insist on joining the bandwagon of latest clothing seen in the market today. They have crossed the Rubicon as it concerns dressing modestly. In the female world, it is either you dress showing your private part or you are not in tune with modernity craze for nakedness of evil intention.

Corruption as a Virus to Economic Growth

The term above is as pandemic as it is endemic to national economy. Why? This is owing to the fact that virus as an organism behaves like a timing bomb and reproduces every millisecond of its young. Corruption has been described as a virus because it reproduces as it permits the fabric of the society. The words of wisdom say that “charity begins at home” and here and now Nigeria will be the focal point of my discourse.
The national reserves have seriously depleted, a lot of businessmen are moving their business to Ghana while internal borrowing is on the increase. All these are a pointer that the nation is infected with a virus diagnosed as corruption. More over, this has continued despite the instituted and the assumed anti-corruption crusade programme. The list of organizations fighting corruption includes Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) etc. Let me remind you that corruption is a virus which myriads of all these organizations cannot cure or eliminate.
I think and suggest once more that before our nation can tackle the venom; we need to cure People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Nigeria. This stems from the fact that the masses have learned and seriously visualized the modus operandi of the party mentioned. I can state categorically that every other ministry that makes up the polity buys corruption formula and implement same in their own sector. They do this to be able to suite the structural and organizational bottlenecks that exist in every sector and as well encourage the spread of the virus. The party in question has injected more power to the virus that it does have. How? They assume themselves as the only party that have the key and can steer the ship of the nation to their own advantage.
In addition to this, at the end of the day every other political office holders are all hankering for the national cake. At the same time adding more succours to the strength of advance fee fraud, organized crime is the order of the day. The economic development of the nation is nothing to write home about. Why is this situation lingering up till date? It is only because of a pathogen termed corruption virus ravaging all sectors of our economy. Then, in some months to come the nation will enter another election period to usher in new sets of leaders to continue the advance fee fraud or to steer the ship of the nation to the right harbor. Allow me to say this let the man who has the solution be in the position: you can find a reference point of this on the article entitled “civil society unrest and Guinea election”.

Civil Society Unrest and Guinea Election

The spate of civil unrest in Guinea and its environs is a demon that cannot be captured so vividly on black and white. It is too appalling to behold or unheard of that women were publicly raped while some are carried away for military men mass rape. My dear reader the list is endless and indeed inexhaustible.
Let me once more delve into the civil society unrest so paramount in the Guinea today before corroborating it with election. It is said of recent that it is only the man with solution that can be in the position to bring about a change in the system. The dwindling state of affairs in the country in question ranging from bad governance, dictatorship, poverty, oppression and civil unrest is a resultant effect of the above saying. When the man in power is wrong or in a dictating form, every other thing will align to the same form.
Once upon a time, in December 2008 when the city of Guineans enters the state of deadlock following the assumption and enthronement of an officer of military face and colour. The man appeared to be Captain Moussa Dadis Camara as the President of the said state. My story goes through September 2007 and 2009 another level of chaos was witnessed by the State. Thus pushing this great country into a state of perfidy. Subsequently, all these atrocities are committed without recourse to the United Nations Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement officials in dispersing protesters in any country.
It is now being reported that one hundred and one of organizations condemned the mishandling of protesters in the city of Guinea. But all things being equal, Albert Einstein have once quoted and I paraphrase him as saying that evil triumph because good men do nothing to forestall evil. Let the Guineans, French and both the regional and international civil society not appear to be only talking tall without an equivalent action for eradicating evil.
Now it is being suggested and recommended as urging the two presidential candidates to walk the path of peace and enthronement of democratic values and norms into the fabric and garments of the Guineans. I think it is high time and in ongoing presidential election for the contenders and the masses especially the military to see this as birth of democracy in the country. While the past starting from the December 2008 event to date as the gestation period of democracy into their dear country. The reason being that it is only the man who have the solution must be in the position to rule. Look out for a closer article to this in my subsequent posts.

Indeed Who Own the Planet: Google or Not?

Today the Internet technology and its structural make-up are receiving a lot of boost in terms of softwares, automation, World Wide Web etc. Have you for once taken a holistic view of what Google provides in relation to content provider, search engine optimization and diversification? It is in bid to fill this technological know-how that led Randall Stross to come up with a book entitled “Planet Google How One Company is Transforming our Lives”. By the same token this led the author of this article to ask now; indeed who own the planet: Google or not?
The above topic cannot be conceptualized without first exposing what Google engender in terms of World Wide Web content provider. It started to rise from a small upstart in the hostel of two post-graduate students of Computer Science at the Stanford University; Sergey Brin and Larry Page in the year 1998. The idea of two post-graduate students of the University of Stanford have transcended into a gigantic Internet search services provider. These two intellectual scenius go with the principle of chain reaction in the world of chemistry. Why? This hinges from the fact that any input in the company brings about a substantial increase in profit, not only that; it also equates innovation with its idea of going global.
Furthermore, the above assertion rings true when in the year 1999 this great company in question received a total sum of $25m from two venture capitalists in the form of equity. It began to enlarge its goal. The reader might be obliged to ask what goal the company is enlarging. It dares to organize all of the world’s information into its search engine, especially through the portals of its world wide web. This very company does not stop its expansion there, they began in roughly about a year ago come up with Google Chrome. This is a browser owned by this service provider to help its client or end-users browse the Internet with their local content browser. To draw this issue to its elastic limit, the planet owner, Google also incorporate a blogger.com into myriads of other services to enable its clients utilize the web to its optimum.
Please at this juncture, the researcher would not forgive me if I do not present this company that dares to thread where angels fled as a hub for the global advertising of all manner of services, goods and educational research center for the intellectuals. It did not leave it alone to its company to provide the platform and utilize the platform as well. Hence, it sells it off to users and clients that tend to earn money through the Internet. The company under discourse serves and provides an enabling environment for buyers and sellers of goods and services to meet and transact business. To drive home my points, the innovations did not stop there; they created affiliates between the buyers and sellers. The affiliate is an intermediary or an agent that advertizes on behalf of the seller.
Here, the transformer and reformer of lives in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) uses its founder’s idealistic ambition to create whatever thing they want to provide to its numerous users. It had and it will always have a divergent view of everything it invents and implements. How? It is until this month and this year that the organizer of information and transformer of idea of this technological know-how came up with another mind boggling proposition. They tend to create an enabling environment for the provision of expert advice to users online ranging from technical support, news, business information etc to its teeming customers. The software or the platform is termed the ‘Baraza’ of Google which will be implemented in several African countries including Nigeria.
After its incorporation in its portal in Nigeria for instance, users in Nigeria or coming into Nigeria can have access to key questions like: Where is Zuma Rock located in Nigeria? Who is the Governor of Lagos State? Users can ask these questions by keying it in and as well get the answers from the expert online all this happening in real time. In a nutshell, the reader without blinking of eye indeed who own the planet: Google or not? I am not trying to present only and only Google to you but on the contrary what other service providers can do more than the firm in terms of its search engines, advertisement platform and coming up with something better than Baraza. Let leave this question on the sand of time or for the next generation to ponder on. What is your comment on this issue?

God’s Sanctification and Glorification

The words sanctification and glorification are one of the words that determine the state of God’s threshing floor for His favours, gifts and blessings. It is on this note that I would like to call to mind why some people or Christians fail to grasp when they enter spiritual stagnancy. Invariably the people of God cannot ordinarily know when their prayers are left unanswered. This is so because His people go astray when they are in need of God’s sanctification. The word of life have it thus; “come to me all ye who are heavily laden and I will give you rest…” Prosperity preachers and hungry Christians leave this on the area of need and wants. Why do we relegate this to only wants and needs – try take a deeper look spiritually and heavenly to this questions: am I going astray from the dictates of God, his statutes, etc.
It is on this imperative note that God in His infinite wisdom begin to see why we need His sanctification if we yearn for his mercy and grace. Yet, it is because of this that God in the Old Testament used Moses to face other nation in a battle and they came out victorious in the end. Also, Moses took with him Aaron and Hur on the top of a mountain until sunset. At the end, they with God on their side saw the downfall of a furious and warring nation. I brought this into the discourse to show us how God needs sanctified people. The three men out of thousand upon thousands of Israelite nation; sanctified in spirit and truth God used to bring His glory to entire nation.
Let me ask you whose report do you believe? Who stand for you in the gap between God and man? The above topic is an eye-opener to you dear reader to be careful of your selection of whom you entrust of God’s sanctification vis a viz His glorification. It is high time Christians who are seeking for glorification first be seekers of His holiness, sanctity and righteousness. At this point it is His purification that brings about glory in any endeavour or area of need in this very life. His purification serves as a ticket for His glorification.
Consequently to substantiate this claim, Jesus Christ of Nazareth did not enter triumphant entry into Jerusalem without first and foremost going through the rigours of His purification in teaching, supplication and quiet time. He is regularly seen on the Mount of Olives asking God the Father to take away this cup if it is His will to do so. In a like manner, let Christians and non Christians understand it when the Bible states that God cannot despise a broken and contrite heart as it is recorded in Psalm 51:17. It is on this verse that God said that “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart – these, O God, You will not despise.
I think you can see it written boldly that the sacrifices of God’s glory are sanctity in the heart and brokenness of spirit. And now chose to embrace His best sacrifice – obedience, a contrite heart and soul and finally His will indeed these He will not despise. Amen.

How Electoral Malpractices Infected Our Political Life

This topical issue has assumed a Nigerian factor and a status unprecedented in recent times: as it has been categorized into major and minor electoral malpractices. It is so because electoral malpractices have been given a monumental term and a name – rigging. At a later stage of political development in Nigeria, it was addressed as a wholesale rigging owing to the rate of inflated electoral figures. This has now become a buzz word which connotes the complete subversion of the will of the people. It suggests that the true outcome of the electoral exercise is replaced with false results, the will of a group usually the government in power.
More so without enumerating the electoral malpractices inherent in Nigeria political landmark: there exists minor electoral malpractices which would probably take place in any human endeavour. But these minor electoral malpractices are not sufficient enough to change the electoral outcome in any way. Likewise, wholesale electoral malpractices delegitimize the moral stand of society in the eyes of all, especially the young and the intellect. In any society where the youth in particular realize that the political leaders, role models, who speak in high sounding language about integrity and tight values and are in facts cheats calls to mind a lot of factors.
This people are willing to falsify documents and engage in multiple thumb printing of electoral materials, the sustenance of societal values, such as the truth, honesty, the triumph of good over evil, become increasingly empty promises. Electoral cheating and dishonesty become acceptable which is the bane of our electoral malpractices in Anambra State in particular and Nigeria in general. Consequently, the reason why the multidimensional nature of electoral malpractices is dangerous to society is that it gets worse with every successful attempt to stop the menace.
Historically, it all started as far back as 1964, electoral malpractices has grown steadily worse and more daring and how the last elections has been described as worse and notorious in all electoral matters. The widespread electoral malpractice and the staggering scale of falsified results were possibly because of serious shortcomings within regulatory authority -- the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This agency failed to present itself as the impartial umpire and became inefficient and non-transparent. Hence, in its regulations became an accessory to active electoral rigging and numerous electoral malpractices bedeviling this nation, Nigeria.
The electoral malpractices are more aggravated by the impunity displayed by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Federal Government in year 2007 on account of the knowledge that such conduct has never in the past been punished is a source of great concern for the future of Democracy in Nigeria. With the above statements, to what extent will electoral malpractices rise to before something meaningful and tangible can be done about it? It is on this note that I will suggest thus; there appears the need for the institutionalization of body to foresee issue of stringent punishment of offenders in electoral matters.
Summarily, it is only and only when this is instituted and implemented that the issue of electoral malpractices will be a thing and crime of the past. This is in view of the 2011 general election coming soon. That when we are talking of federal character we can be able to talk on a serious note and action electoral character. Reader, how do you view this suggestion and call to action to avert more electoral malpractices and cushion the fledgling democracy in Nigeria to grow.

The Face of Organizational Politics

The politics that exists in different organizations emanates as a result of the following questions; what is in it for me? And most importantly what is in it for them? When staffs engage in politics in their respective organizations, they are moved by these separate questions of what is in it for me and what is in it for them? As a corollary to this, coming up with answers to the question above leads one to play organizational politics very well.
In addition to this, to be able to remain on the top cadre of the organization you find yourself -- what is in it for them and you is a litmus test for you as it pertains t an involvement. Secondly, you must be wise enough to engage in any politics, especially when it comes to an organization. This is so because what belongs to us is what we take and keep. There is no two ways about it, it is either you play or you are played out of the game of organizational politics.
To buttress the above points, let me take an in-depth analysis of how organizational politics have been given a face. It has been given an entirely new face: its face in public sector cannot be compared with that in the private sector. This is owing to the fact that the older and bigger a company grows, the unfair it appears in every perspective and even to you. Here, the latter rings true in the private sector more than in the public sector which appears to be static to growth in some cases.
Again, the operation of the two sectors in question cannot agree to the same pattern. It is in private sector that a high ranked worker is laid off while the junior or his subordinate enthroned to the same rank. At this juncture, I cannot cite the layoff being gingered by recession or any other foreseen or unforeseen factors. But I am stating categorically that in every organization, be it in the issue of national cake there usually comes the question of what is in for me and what is in it for them?Subsequently, it is when these questions are given their rightful answers that individuals within an organization begin to strategize and counter-strategize their political machine. Or engage in the politics that exist in their organization: from award of contracts to who suppose to go for advance studies. In fact the list is endless as to what bring about the issue of organizational politics especially when it comes to fringe benefits and promotions. In the intermediary let me sound a note of warning to the readers, politics in the organization does not have a definite formula. This comes to mind bearing the dynamic nature of any organization. This politics do not go easy with the swift or the smart or psychologically any particular individual that has naturally acquired the techniques that solves the politics of organizations. It is due to the multi-dimensional nature of an organization that make the author came up with the above topic - The Face of Organizational Politics. I think it is high time I begin to ask you which face do your organizational politics have? On this note, let me cite the old sayings that goes this way - - a handful of might is worth ten times a truckload of right.

A PARADIGM SHIFT TO OUTSOURCING PART (A)

The case for a national outsourcing initiative for any country drives from the fact that, globally, outsourcing is gaining momentum and is a source for enhancing revenue generation, particularly in developing economies. In its most common form, outsourcing occurs anytime one enterprise makes a contract with another to perform a process that is normally done internally by the first enterprise.
Outsourcing took a major leap forward in the late 1960s when firms began to use data transfer to outsource their payroll administration. Today, India, China and other South East Asian economies have made outsourcing an important emerging and key sector in the development of their economies.
In the drive for economic returns and development of the economy in any country, the government has recognized the growing importance of the outsourcing economy in the wealth of nations. The belief today is that some countries has the basic ingredients and is at the stage where it can now develop a vibrant outsourcing sector.
On the contrary, a precise definition of outsourcing or subservicing has yet to be agreed upon. Thus, the term is used inconsistently. However, outsourcing is often viewed as involving the contracting out of a business function; one previously performed in-house – to an external provider. Of recent concern is the ability of businesses to outsource to suppliers outside the nation, sometimes referred to as offshoring or offshore outsourcing. In addition, several related terms have emerged to grasp various aspects of the complex relationship between economic organizations or networks, such as nearshoring, multisourcing and strategic outsourcing. Almost any conceivable business practice can be outsourced for any number of stated reasons. The implications of outsourcing objectively and subjectively vary across time and space.
Here are some of the related reasons that engender outsourcing as a panacea not only for large corporations but also for small businesses. Some organizations outsource to;
I. Control Capital Costs: Cost-cutting may not be the only reasons to outsource, but it is certainly a major factor. Outsourcing converts fixed costs to variable costs, releases capital for investment elsewhere in your business, and allows you to avoid large expenditures in the early stages of the business. The benefit of outsourcing as it pertains to controlling capital costs also make your firm more attractive to investors. This is owing to the fact that it allows you to pump more capital directly into revenue-producing activities.
II. Increased Efficiency: Some company that does everything themselves have much higher research, development, marketing, and distribution expenses. At the end of the day, all of which must be passed on to customers. Invariably, an outside provider’s cost structure and economy of scale can give your firm an important competitive advantage.
III. Reduce Labour Costs: The issue of hiring and training of staff for short-term or peripheral projects can be very expensive and temporary employees do not always live up to expectations. Here, outsourcing lets you focus your human resources where you need them most.
IV. Start a new Project Quickly: A good outsourcing firm has the resources to start a project right away. At the same time, handling the same project in-house might involve taking weeks or months to hire the right people, train them, and provide the support needed. Subsequently, if a project requires major capital investments (such as building a series of distribution centers), the startup process can be even more difficult.
V. Focus on your Core Business: Every business has limited resources, and every manager has limited time and attention. Outsourcing can help your business to shift its focus from peripheral activities toward work that serves the customer, and it can help managers set their priorities more clearly.
Summarily, outsourcing or subservicing often refers to the process of contracting to a third-party. While outsourcing may be viewed as a component to the growing division of labour encompassing all societies, the term did not enter English-speaking lexicon until the 1980s. More so, its applications are more felt now in developed countries than in the undeveloped countries. Since the 1980s, transnational corporations have increased subcontracting across national boundaries. Readers what benefit are there when organizations outsource and what is your view to outsourcing? It will be seen on your comment.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY EXPANSION (PART II)

The topic above is a follow-up of my last blog post entitled “Overview of Information Technology Part I”. Here, the reader will gain an in-depth knowledge and understanding of information technology evolution and standardization. May I once more lead you to an eye-opening venture of the emergence of computer and its appendages, Internet etc. It is against this backdrop that I will relate to you how computer as a tool, totally indispensable in this age got the extension called Internet: with computer playing a vital role. In the year 2002, in a High Tech interactive reveals the following as it discusses this technology:
“…before the Internet was developed, Isaac Asimov had written about things that happened in the galaxy in the electronic age. It is possible that in future from a single central room; a group of people are able to control all forms of human life, transactions and business, across the nations. This is so because as you know, the Internet is a derivative from the Apernet, which was developed in the American Army galaxy industry”.
With the above passage in focus, I think it is high time we discuss the Information age and Speed.
§ Information age and Speed: when we take a closer look on the development of Banks, Marine-time industry, Manufacturing, Governmental setup especially election, Education and Communication in view of mobile devices we tend to or must envisage speed. It permeates and in deed diffuses into any form of societal strata and the world in general. He that works in the banking industry with computerized architecture must work at the pace of speed. At the same time, he that teaches or works in exporting or importing must act with every sense of speed. More so, he that dwells in the area of information dissemination must do so with every momentum of speed and so on.
This impression is in tandem with the assertion of Christ Uwaje and he states; “one vital phenomenon that unveiled itself in 1998 and which shaped the way information technology would react and evolve henceforth is speed. When we talk of speed you are already referring to the Internet. That is the structure analysis of the engine or the potential of the I.T. industry.” Actually, the potential of the I.T. industry is so paramount in every sphere of our day-to-day activities. This entails with the speed that computer and its successive architecture brings and encourage.
§ The GUI – Graphical User Interface World:
Computer architecture and mode of operation have gone into a series of evolution. Initially, batch mode is being used as from 1950s to 1960s, which is the first age. The time-sharing and interaction via commands exists from 1960s to early 1980s and the raster graphics based and WIMP GUIs exits from 1980s to 1990s. Finally, the present age starts from 1990s down. Summarily making up the four ages of user interfaces.
The WIMP Generation: The modern trend is for operating system (O/S) to support WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus and Pointing device, typically a mouse). It is graphical user interface, which allows easy user interaction with the computer. Contrarily, the next generation has been described as Post-WIMP. These do not use menus, forms, or toolbars but rely on, for example, gesture and speech recognition for specifying the operation and the operand.
The Post-WIMP Generation: The feel of this generation is mostly felt in the more advanced countries. This generation are based on a three dimensional (3D) spatial metaphor rather than the two dimensional desktop metaphor for organizing information. The area in which this has been fully utilized so much is in the area of forensic study and research.
Some of the example of this generation are the commercially available pen-based (the notebook laptops with Intel Atom architecture), hand held Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) such as Apple Newton, Arcade games and Driving simulators with steering wheels, golf simulators where the player hits the real golf ball with a real golf club and the computer simulates the trajectory and displays it.
Finally, it is been predicted that the future of hardware consisting of wearable computers, PDAs and wall-sized displays where the user sees computer-generated information superimposed on real-world objects via optical or video merging to provide, for example annotation or x-ray vision. The world is moving towards this great era, why not join the trail.

OVERVIEW OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (PART I)

Basic Concepts of Information Technology:

The world has moved from the industrial age into information age. The whole world now depends on information, education as an institute is not an exception to this particular fact. The world has witnessed an information revolution, a combination of massive increase in the world’s inventory of information and the technical development of the means of processing and transmitting information

Computers are at the center of information technology. Information is what computers process, transmit and store. We use computers to create, manipulate, and manage information faster and more easily than with any system previously devised. So, better you understand computers and what they can and cannot so, the more power you will have to put information to work for you. Knowledge is power!

But information technology does not only involve computers. It also includes the way computer and communications technologies are combined, the result is “Information Technology” ------- INFOTECH, --- technology that merges computing with telecommunication links carrying data, sound, and video. Therefore, there are two parts to information technology- computers and communications.

Moreover, information technology (IT) as it is defined by the Longman Dictionary of contemporary English as the study or use of electronic processor for storing information and making it available; INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY. In addition to, before I forge ahead in relating it to the issue of Nigerian Education system, I still have to put into consideration the second concept of information technology. That concept is the communication technology.

Communications Technology:

This is the technology that is used to communicate (digital) data. Data communication, often called telecommunication, means transmitting data and information electronically from one point to another using the telephone, radio and microware transmission devices, laser beams, optical fiber cables and direct wiring.

Computers can be standalone machines, unconnected to anything else. If all you are doing is word processing to write term paper; that may be fine. The communications component of the computer system vastly extends the range of PCs. Data communication provides information processing services throughout the office on the around the world.

Again; to be able to understand the concept of information technology, you need to be aware of how computers work. There are three key concepts that form the basis of computer operation:

First: The purpose of a computer is to process data into information. Data consists of the raw facts and figures that are processed into information for example, the votes for different candidates being elected to student government office. Information is data that has been summarize or otherwise manipulated for use in decision-making for example, the total votes for each candidate, which are used to decide who won.

Second: You should know the difference between hardware and software. Hardware consists of all the machinery and equipment in a computer system. The hardware includes among other devices, the keyboard, the screen, the printer and the “box”-the computer or processing device itself.

Software, or programs; consists of all the instructions that tell the computer how to perform a task. These instructions come from a software developer in a form (such as a CD-ROM disk) that will be accepted by the computer. Examples you may have heard of are Microsoft windows 98 or office 2000.

Third: regardless of type and size, all computers follow the same basic operations;

(1) Input, (2) Processing, (3) Storage and (4) Output.
